Shakespeare goes digital (X-post)

Why x-posted? It's Shake-freakin-speare!!!

From Reuters via Yahoo news: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080326/tc_nm/britain_shakespeare_digital_dc

A U.S. and British library plan to reproduce online all 75 editions of William Shakespeare's plays printed in the quarto format before the year 1641.

The Bodleian Library in Oxford and Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC have joined forces to download their collections, building on the work of the British Library which digitized its collection of quarto editions in 2004.

In the absence of surviving manuscripts, the quartos -- Shakespeare's earliest printed editions -- offer the closest known evidence of what Shakespeare might actually have written, and what appeared on the early modern English stage.

The project is designed to make all of the quartos, many of which are only accessible to scholars, available to the wider public.

The process of downloading the quartos will begin next month and take a year to complete.

Online visitors will be able to compare images side-by-side, lay one facsimile on top of the other, search plays and mark and tag the texts.

As well as highlighting more minor differences between copies of the same quarto, the digital database will also make it easier to study the often wide discrepancies between quartos, including some of Shakespeare's most famous lines.

"There will be countless new ways for scholars, teachers, and students to examine the quarto texts, particularly of 'Hamlet'," said Folger director Gail Kern Paster.

"You find out all sorts of things -- about how the copies went through the press, and also about the printing process," she added.

Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays and collaborated on several more between about 1590 and 1613. He died in 1616.

Study of Marginalia

Is it just me or has there been an increase in people wanting to study marginalia lately? I didn't get many questions about it much before but for the past two years there has been a steady flow of people documenting readers comments.

Do you get used books if they have comments in them? Or do you like clean copies? I've found it both fascinating and infuriating. When i was a student i'd go so far as to argue with the previous owner of a particular book.

Now I think i'd have a heart-attack if I saw someone wander toward my books with a pen.

Wishing I could read Latin,

BEST bookstore

What is the the BEST bookstore you know?

Not a "pretty good" bookstore; but the best in your own experience. And since we're talking superlatives, just one.

The best bookstore I know is Wilshire Books in Santa Monica, California <http://sprezzatura.editthispage.com/wilshirebooks>.

Wilshire Books is a used bookstore. The room is small, about 30 feet square (200 meters square). The stock is rotates rapidly. Since the store buys and sells review copies, it is possible to purchase books before they have been published.

It is a used book shop, not a rare book shop: the books are meant for reading, not collecting. The prices are fair, not overpriced.

What makes it great is the selection. Not broad, but focussed, and no junk.

L.A. - Midnight Special Bookstore

Last year, well over 1000 of you gave us so much money, so much of your time and so much heart, to make sure we could reopen after 8 months "in storage." Unfortunately, the delay was too great and our debts grew with the delays. Only local outlets of major chains can afford the losses that come with opening stores; even though our sales were steadily growing, it was not fast enough to keep us going until we could sustain
ourselves.

Therefore, it is with so much sadness and even much anger, that we announce we are closing the Midnight Special Bookstore. We know how much you have given to us; we want you to know how hard we tried and how long we worked to keep our doors open. We also want you to know how sincerely we will miss your comments, complaints, support, events, books, small talk, jokes, ideas; you have been our community... our daily life, for 34 years.

We will close our doors in about 4 or 5 weeks (we'll post the exact date as it comes closer) and our GREAT BIG SALE starts Saturday, May 8. Please come buy us out!! And pick up a copy of our list of independent booksellers in Los Angeles... we would never leave you with nowhere to go! All events for May will proceed as planned, unless the author wishes to cancel. All events after June 2nd are cancelled.

These are amazing times we live in, both at home and all over the world. They are as exciting as they are tragic, because, we in this country who have such great responsibility, have also a great opportunity to open minds and accelerate change; and maybe, even begin to close down an unjust and oppressive system.

Nothing will die when the Midnight Special closes it doors, because all of you and our staff of the last 34 years -- and today... Ruben, Rolando, Erin, Bill, Lorraine, Olin, Daniel, Jason and Jim -- are the life of the Midnight Special, and each one of us is part of a much larger voice that cannot be silenced.

I'm reading a great new memoir by and about Madeleine Albright titled "Madam Secretary." I can't put it down.

She writes about her birth in the former Czechoslovakia, her refuge status after WWII, moving to the US, her diplomatic/academic family, etc. Really fascinating stuff...
